Summits for Stacey 11/06/03
by MountainWoman Staff
11/6/2003

Greetings Mountain Women!

Last week we brought you a story of one remarkable MountainWoman who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness and funds for a disease that she can’t even get, prostate cancer. This week, I’d like to introduce you to another remarkable MountainWoman who is climbing for her own cause – her life.

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Carolyn McHale of
Sheclimbs inc., a national resource organization for women climbers. Carolyn’s good friend Stacey Collver, the former President of Sheclimbs, was diagnosed with Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) in August of this year. LAM is a rare and terminal lung disease that affects young women, is of unknown origin, and has no cure. Symptoms are similar to asthma, but abnormal cell growths eventually block the passage of blood, lymph, and air to the lungs. Already in the advanced stages of this disease, Stacey uses supplemental oxygen at all times. The cause of LAM is unknown and there is no treatment, save a lung transplant--which Stacey is on the waiting list for at Stanford. Travel to higher altitudes, including air travel, is no longer possible.

Until her health forced retirement, Stacey was President of Sheclimbs. Prior to that she was VP, and she remains active as Coordinator for their San Francisco chapter. Stacey is an enthusiastic and accomplished climber-until this month she was manager of a climbing gym, a climbing instructor, and coach of a kid's climbing team that boasts kids with top 10 rankings nationally. Stacey placed 3rd in her age group (mid-30's) at the Phoenix Bouldering Competition (national climbing event) this past spring.

Across the country, Stacey's friends are rallying to raise awareness of this fatal disease while raising money for Stacey's treatment through multiple fundraisers. On Sept. 11th, Sheclimbs launched the Summits for Stacey program with an ascent of the highest point in the NE--Mt. Washington, NH (6288'). Summits asks sheclimbers & friends to reach a summit, take a picture of themselves at the top, and make a donation to the Wind Song Foundation (after Stacey's Chinese birth name). They seek to raise $15,000+ while raising Stacey's spirits, awareness of this disease, and the need for organ donors of all ages and walks of life.

Sheclimbers are holding events locally, including silent auctions, in DC and San Francisco. They are working on a national auction to be held online December 13th. If you are interested in knowing more about this, Carolyn would be more than happy, and grateful, to discuss it with you. You can contact her at summits@sheclimbs.org.
